What is a SILVER SHADED / SILVER SHELL Maine Coon Cat? ​
Silver Shaded/Shell is a color. The Silver Shaded and Silver Shell Maine Coon cats look almost white. Yes--these cats are truly SILVER! Their unique and exquisite color makes them highly desirable. It is only with much difficulty and selective breeding that the pure silver color is achieved.
Genetically, a Silver Shaded/Shell Maine Coon Cat is a BLACK CAT. How can breeders make a BLACK cat appear almost white? Hint: It's not magic!! Breeders can achieve this special coloration whenever the silver inhibitor comes up so HIGH onto each hair, that only the "tippy-top" of each hair strand has black pigment. Breeders must be both selective & intentional in their breeding practices to achieve high quality silver shaded and silver shell color Maine coon kittens.

How common are Silver Shaded or Silver Shelled Maine coons?
I have some old books that briefly mention the existence of this color. We know the color DID exist, however, finding a breeder was almost impossible. Over the last 10 years, there have been improvements and more breeders working with the silver shaded/shell color.
Are Blue-eyed Maine Coons RARE?​
This was a genetic mutation was first found in European Maine Coons in the year 2016. This beautiful mutation is still in it's infancy. There are a few breeders working with blue-eyes worldwide. See "Blue Eyes" below for more information
This gorgeous silver (almost white) cat is actually a black tabby cat! However, the silver undercoat is coming so HIGH onto the hair, that only the very tippy-top of each hair has black color. The difficulty with this specialty color is maintaining that high point of silver.

What is a POLYDACTYL Maine Coon?​
Again we have a genetic mutation that is now considered (and registered) separate from a normal Maine Coon. The polydactyl Maine Coon is a specialty cat with many toes and is a fascination for those who have an appreciation for all things unique! (~or Earnest Hemingway)
